Food & Nutrition Resources: A Reference Guide.

Meals for the Elderly (Congregate/Home-Delivered)

Nutritious meals provided by the Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) are available in a congregate setting at least once a day around the noon hour, 5 or more days per week. In some areas breakfast or special evening meals are available. Home-delivered or "meals on wheels" may be provided by AAAs when an eligible person is in need of the service. These deliveries may be made daily or weekly depending on the types of food served. Anyone age 60 or older and his/her spouse as well as handicapped or disabled people who reside with people over age 60 are eligible for these nutrition services. The meals must meet 1/3 of the Recommended Daily Allowances for persons 51 years and older. Set fees are not charged for the meals, but contributions are requested; food stamp benefits may be used as a contribution.

Contact:

Call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116, a nationwide directory assistance service (connected to the National Association of Agencies on Aging) to help older persons locate local support resources. The number is in operation from 9 AM to 11 PM (e.s.t.). The information specialist on the line will ask the caller what is needed and for the county, zip, and/or city of their residence. Individuals can also contact the PA Department of Aging (717)783-6207 or their local Agency on Aging to find out about the services available in their area.
