Take Action: Tell Gov. Corbett to
Stop the Food Stamp Asset Test!

SNAP (food stamps)—Pennsylvania's most important anti-hunger program—is under attack again. The state plans to bar families with modest savings from getting SNAP starting May 1. People with as little as $2,000 in savings ($3,250 for seniors and people with disabilities) would no longer qualify for benefits. Tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians would be cut from the program in this tough economy. (For more information, click here.)

Here's what you can do:

  1. Call the Governor's office anytime at 717-787-2500 or between January 23 and the 31 at 1-800-515-8134 (tollfree number provided by AARP Pennsylvania) and tell them:

"I urge you to stop efforts to reinstate the asset test for food stamps. This proposal would hurt seniors and Pennsylvania's economy."
  2. Email the governor with a message like this:

    Dear Governor Corbett:

I urge you to suspend efforts to reinstate the asset test for food stamps (SNAP), which would devastate Pennsylvania.

    An asset test would:

    1) Force families to drain their savings before getting help, making it harder for them to transition from poverty to self-sufficiency. A household with as little $2,000 in savings could be wiped out by one visit to the emergency room.

    2) Disproportionately hurt seniors on fixed incomes and people who've recently lost their jobs.

    3) Impact local businesses and the economy, by depriving Pennsylvania of tens of millions in federal SNAP dollars, which would otherwise be pumped into our economy as those dollars are spent at grocery stores and farmers' markets.

With so many Pennsylvanians still struggling to get back on their feet, it makes no sense to make it harder for families to get the help they need. I urge to you to stop the asset test for food stamps.

  3. Contact your state representatives and senators and tell them that the Food Stamp asset test will hurt Pennsylvanians in need, as well as local economies in the Commonwealth. Ask them to publicly oppose its reinstatement.

  4. Write a letter to the editor in your local daily newspaper.

  5. Read the letter Hunger Action, along with an array of other organizations across the Commonwealth, sent to the Governor, opposing the asset test. Though it's already been delivered, if you would like your organization to be included in the list of signees, please let us know.
  6. If you're a SNAP/Food Stamp recipient with assets you think might make you ineligible for benefits if this policy goes into effect, please contact us via email or at 1-800-634-2033 with any questions or to share your story with us.
  7. SPREAD THE WORD!
